I remember this symbol by realizing that it looks like a women (On the left) pointing to a family tree (right). Pointing to family tree = family name.

girls should be dedicated to their family, and that makes me thing of the family name, or “to be surnamed””

the second part of this character means “born,” so that it can literally translate to female born. One receives a surname after being born out of a female

The right character reminds me of a inverted tree, a family tree. With the female character, it resonates to a female which needs to know her roots, which is the family name.

the character combination of female and ‘to give birth/to give life’ meaning family name, makes me think of how after a woman gives birth, the first name their child has is the family name before they are giving a personal name.

The left character is female and the right is similar to character of king except it has a head and arm. So a woman and a king together represents a family, which is family name.

In some cultures the child inherits the mother’s name. Therefore the woman radical symbolizes the continuity of the family name.

An alternative way to remember writing the character 姓 is to think of it as a combination of the characters 女 (nǚ) and 生 (shēng). The 女 represents a woman, and the 生 represents birth or life. Together, they form the character 姓, which means “surname” or “family name.” So, imagine a woman giving birth, representing the passing down of the family name. I hope it helps! 😄👍
