I always remember this from comparing it with 下,or under. 下 looks like it is holding something up because it is under, whereas 上 has a base because it sits above something

Shanghai means above water, so it’s the first part that means above.

The only other character stroke is above the base on the vertical stroke.

There is a short heng dash drawn on top of a longer one which seems like the the base meaning above.

I remember this character by comparing it with 下, which means under. The dash under the base is pointing down for 下 and for the dash is pointing up for 上。

I see this character every day because we study at nyu Shanghai. The two lines are above the horizontal line, it is a visualization of the above in the form of a character.

It almost looks like “S” as in Shanghai if you write it quickly and convert it to an English letter
