火 radical means fire which signifies that this lights up. 灯 is used in 红绿灯 which means stop light, and the second radical looks like a stoplight itself hanging from the pole.

I remember how to say the character 灯, as in 红绿灯, by remembering that 灯 sounds like 等 like 等一下 and you also, similarly, have to wait at a light.

The first radical is the fire radical. On the left side, we can see a lamp stand. So, that is how the character means light/lamp

The left side is fire and the right side reminds me of a handle, so it’s like fire is being held, thus it’s a lamp.

since the fire character in the radical can be seen as the LIGHT to brighten the dark room, the vertical line can be like the pulling switch to turn on the lamp.

The fire radical reminds me of light, and the sound associated with a “light bulb moment” is similar to “deng.”
