it’s the combination of the mouth radical and the character for that or there, so a person is giving directions of “where” something is.

If we know that 那 is already used to point out something that’s “over there,” the addition of the 口 radical turns it into a question: WHERE?

The middle of the character looks like a sail, which makes me think about a boat not knowing “where” to go. 哪

To recall writing the character 那, you can think of it as a combination of two components: ⻏ (fú) meaning “roof” and 尔 (ěr) meaning “you”. Start with the ⻏ shape and add the 尔 stroke inside.
