because the left radical indicates “cloth” and the right character by itself means “knife,” combining them means cutting a cloth, which to me is an action of creating something new or a new beginning just like how a person would cut their hair before a new beginning.

The left part of the character looks like a representation of a plant sprouting from the ground, with the vertical line representing the stem and the horizontal line representing the leafs. This character can evoke the image of something in its initial stage of growth or development which is in its meaning similar to beginning.

I see the clothing radical on the left next to the knife radical. When you’re making clothes, in the BEGINNING, you must cut the fabric.

I always used to wonder why this word didn’t mean a piece of clothing like 裤子 or 衬衫。 I intrepreted it as the first step to sewing/making clothing is cutting the cloth. Hence the clothing radical and the knife. At the BEGINNING of the process you must cut the fabric.
